July 28th, 2009
Mr and Mrs have been so much fun but in the last few days Mrs has become ill. She has started having seizures in the morning and have become more frequent as the days go by. We are really scared for her. We initially thought that maybe she wasn't getting enough food or correct nutrients and that caused her to seizure each time her body tried to lay an egg. Currently we think she has been infected with either the West Nile virus or some other neurological disorder. She won't eat or drink and is becoming very skinny and ragged. Today may be her last. It saddens us that she will have to be put down. We hope Mr will be okay. We will miss her.

So we were able to get another sweet pair of ducks! This time they are Blue Runners. They are a very cute couple. They are pretty calm but they definitely could use some "hand feeding." They are about 12 weeks along and pretty much all feathered in. He is just starting to get his curly in. The lady who sold them to us also sold us the cage which will serve as a shield for when the wild, ravenous beast decides to attack.
We got them because the little Khaki Campbells we got last Monday are really scared of us...We've tried over and over to hold them, feed them, but eh just squirm and squeak until you put them down...I still don't have a great picture of them because whenever I poke my head in or even show my face they frantically run around the cage and hide under the ramp. Other ducklings we've had would squeak when we'd first pick them up, except Goldi, but not like them...We still really haven't decided whether or not we're going to keep them or sell them...
So that evening my Mrs. Jack B. Quick was cutting my hair out on our back lawn when our neighbor yelled, "I think your ducks are lose..." We looked back at the pen and we could see the two blues and knew that the little ducklings couldn't get out. So I stayed put and Mrs. J.B. Quick went to check it out. Not 30 seconds later they both yelled, "Get up here!" So I went running up, with my hair halfway cut and the apron still on to see what was going on. Our neighbor walked back holding a cute little mallard duckling that had just wondered into the yard. I went looking to see if I could hear a momma duck quacking or maybe find other ducklings but nothing. So we decided to keep her and named her Mallie. She is so cute and tiny! She can't be more than a day or two old. She is so sweet! She'll just cuddle up in your hand and fall right to sleep but occasionally she'll spring from your hand and go hide in the grass and good luck finding her...Practically impossible to find! So we now currently own 6 ducks!

A while back a friend of ours, Wendi, had an inheriting of a cute White Pekin duck. She knew that I had just gotten two ducks, Scratch and Dent. So she called me up and told me about the whole thing. I won't go into details except for the fact that it wasn't by any of her doing...anyway she brought, Macey the duck, over. I was expecting a duckling about the size of ours but nope, I was dead wrong. She was probably 6-8 weeks along, starting to feather and quacked! She was calm and followed Wendi around. The two fuzzy pictures are of her when she first brought her over.
To make a long story short, Macey ended up going to our brother and sister in-law's place up in Idaho where they have lots of land. Their little son, loved Macey and called her Mr. Duck and George. They went everywhere together and had a grand old time. She stayed up there for about a month to six weeks. But they were also getting a dog soon and didn't know what they were going to do with the duck not knowing how the dog and duck would get along. So a few days before they got their dog, they brought over Macey to our place for us to keep (right). She was so cute! We gave her a bath and she nessled down pretty quick and seemed to feel right at home. We let our ducklings, Jack, Jill and Goldi out to see how they would react together. Out of curiosity, Macey would nibble at the babies as they would frantically scurry away. We decided we should separate them for the night and let them warm up to each other over time. Anyway, another long story short, that night, after all the hard work we had put into making the fence stronger, the same ravenous beast that killed Scratch and Dent, still an unknown creature, dug an 8" whole, ripped up our stakes and that was the end of Macey...Luckily for us, the creature wasn't able to get to our ducklings locked up in the mini-barn. We felt so bad and crushed...
A few nights later, I forgot to close the mini-barn door and it got in again, ripping up rocks first and then the stakes and fence to kill Jack, Jill and Goldilocks...
Whatever it is, it needs to be disposed of...

Rainy Day with the Trio
It is raining so much today and has for the past couple of days and I don't think it is going to stop anytime soon. So since I'm not going to be able to play with the ducks for a while outside, I decided to sneak them in while I work on my homework. Sssshh! The Mrs. doesn't know yet..
Jill (above) is our little model! In every picture she is posing! She cocks her head just before you take the picture! I laugh every time! She loved being inside and in my lap. She just hung out for a while. Got a little curious as our time drew to an end and climbed up on my shoulder as well. I wonder if she could smell Goldi and felt more protected and cozy up there?

Jack (above) on the other hand couldn't hold still! It was his first time being separated from the other two and made it known! It took about 45 min for him to stop calling for the others and sit down and relax. He is still the man! Can't you see the resemblance!?
Goldi (above) just sat tight but she didn't like sitting on my lap very much. She wanted to be able to see everything and keep warm by my neck. She hung out for a while on my shoulder (like in the picture) and then went and hid under my hood for about an hour. She is truly a sweetheart! Anyway, fun day and no accidents!
P.S. Jana wasn't too upset ;)

Week 1

Here goes round 2! Jack and Jill are both Fawn-White Indian Runner ducks and Goldilocks is a Khaki Campbell. We've been looking for some indian runners for a while now and at one point had some reserved but which were accidentally sold the day we had scheduled to pick them up. Then, one day I tried one more place and low and behold they had some runners! So I hurried over to pick out a couple. When I got there, I debated between the five runners...but after about ten minutes I had the two I wanted in a box ready to go! But then something in the corner caught my attention...there was this tiny duckling huddled up in the corner all by herself and I couldn't resist her. She is a grayish color with gold tips, thus the name, and she turns out to be the most calm and friendly of the bunch. What a sweetheart!

Bad News
Well there is some sad news...on Friday, May 29th, Scratch and Dent were found mangled by cats or a mink. It was a horrific scene. They have gone but the short time they lived, they were loved and are now missed. It has been a few days since their passing and it is weird to look out back and not see them running around and playing in their pond.
